¿adónde?
¿adónde? is a label that we easily connect with contemporary design.
¿adónde? brings together artisanship and small industry at a local level under an environmental perspective. ¿adónde? means ¨where¨ in spanish which for us translates into a policy of complete openness. People know where and how our objects are made. Some people think that we're from Spain. We're actually two creative minds in Paris -- Laurent Serin et Javier Gutierrez Carcache. It kind of makes sense that with the second name and a not so french accent, people get to the spanish conclusion, but everything in ¿adónde? is french... except Javier who is from Nicaragua. Q. So, what's in a name? A. The work of a french engineer/artist and that of a nicaraguan with an anthropology background. We both try to think about how to improve our environment, particularly around the table. Our approach is minimalist and low tech. We want to make objects that are plain, that can be used differently and for different purposes. We often use one single raw material. We feel that the more we simplify an object, the more it will be useful. Our first collection, "cylinders" -- modular stoneware -- seduced some of the best chefs including Alain Ducasse, Gerald Passedat who serves his mythic plate "bouille-a-baisse" in our cylinders (see photo attached), and many more. Each piece serves its own purpose in the "cylinder" series, but it becomes something else when associated with other elements. One simple object becomes more useful and elaborate when mixed with others and anyone can make these cylinders their own through use, thus making them a tool for creativity. Want proof? None of the chefs we work with use the cylinders the same way. That's ¿adónde? for us: to create, to modulate, to diversify an object's function, to simplify it to make it more useful, to have fun everyday in the kitchen, at the table, using shelfs... everyday a different way. All of our works include a modular and fun part to them. They are the work of a very particular attention to raw materials in terms of quality and origin -- non polluting stoneware, all-natural enamels, recycled cardboard, FSC certified paper, wood from well managed forests, stainless steel... IN A FEW WORDS: ¿adónde? is a french label behind a spanish name that causes confusion but where everything is french. Well almost. Javier isn't. Laurent is. ¿adónde? designs are minimalist and focused around the table. ¿adónde? respects the environment which specifically means producing locally, using recycled materials or materials that respect the environment -- when one of our plates is broken, it goes back to being a stone in nature.
